CASE A, Colorfabb natural PLA/PHA

Colorfabb promotes it's natural PLA/PHA filament as the perfect solution for the use of 3D printing for investment casting.
They published different articles about this topic on their blog.

Reasons why the filament is used

  • clean burnout, it decomposes at 600 degrees C
  • contains no additives no pigments
  • biodegradable
  • 3d prints with smooth surface and easy printing on most FDM 3d printers
  • reasonably priced.

Previous experiments with PLA showed promising results in terms of clean burnout.

Printer settings :

  • processing temp : 210
  • printed on ultimaker 2
  • with a 0.4 nozzle,
  • layer height 0.06
  • --> zip file w Gcode, cura profile and STL

Results :

  • The material is slightly translucent and a bit shiny, which I found makes it hard to judge if fine level details are well printed yes or no.
CASE B, Polymaker

For this test I'm using Polymakers Polysmooth snow white filament. Polysmooth has developed a line of filaments which can be surface treated to have a smoother finish. Nebulizer This filament is not especially announced for the use of investment casting, but since most filaments have a rather clean burnout. The Polycast filament, this time of writing, is only available on special request.

Polysmooth is a bit unclear about what their filament is made out of.

Printer settings :

  • printed on ultimaker 2
  • processing temp : 210
  • with a 0.4 nozzle,
  • layer height 0.06
  • --> zip file w Gcode, cura profile and STL
